Amlogic have released their latest FHD STB processor in their S8 series – the Amlogic S805X2 for 2K IPTV and OTT deployment. The new chipset adds the support for AV1 video decoding, which is in accordance with Google who required that Android TV devices launching on Android 11 must support AV1.

As we see in the specifications the Amlogic S805X2 is a Quad-Core Cortex-A35 CPU manufactured in 12nm, a significant improvement from previous 28nm. Compared with the other two chipsets, Amlogic S805X2 chipset chooses A35 CPU cores replacement with Cortex A53 providing 32% lower power per core and increasing 25% efficiency. It integrates a Mali-G31 MP2 GPU, also greatly exceeding the previous Mali-450 MP3 in performance, and allows native decoding of H.265, VP9 video with the support for higher HDR standard.
Overall, Amlogic S805X2 provides a cost-down but high-performance 2K processor solution for streaming boxes to support AV1 and cater to the market demand.
