2024-01-10    329 Reads
SDMC, the leading provider of smart home ecosystem solutions, and MaxLinear, Inc. (Nasdaq: MXL), a leader in broadband access solutions, announced today their strategic partnership to jointly develop DOCSIS 4.0 cable modems and gateways powered by cutting-edge chips from MaxLinear. This collaboration aims to meet the growing consumer demand for higher data rates by offering advanced solutions to cable operators worldwide. The driving force behind this innovation is MaxLinear's groundbreaking two-chip solution, which is set to spearhead the next generation of products and supersede the highly acclaimed DOCSIS 3.1 Puma 7 platform.

MaxLinear made waves in 2020 with the acquisition of Intel Corporation's Home Gateway Platform Division, which boasted an extensive DOCSIS technology portfolio. SDMC has previously collaborated with MaxLinear on the development of DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems for operators, and there is a growing demand for their collaborative products from cable operators globally.

DOCSIS is widely adopted by cable operators worldwide because it enables high-bandwidth data transfer over existing coaxial cable systems, making it possible to deliver broadband internet to homes and businesses through the same networks that distribute video content. With the increasing prevalence and demand for high-speed fiber-optic internet, cable operators are strategically planning upgrade their existing DOCSIS 3.1 to the next cutting-edge version, DOCSIS 4.0. This forward-thinking move aims to deliver unparalleled speeds and establish robust networks capable of seamlessly supporting advanced video collaboration tools, virtual reality experiences, large numbers of Internet of Things(IoT) applications, and more.

"We are glad to expand our partnership with MaxLinear and believe there is a significant opportunity for scalable deployments of DOCSIS 4.0 platforms," said Handson Chen, Senior Vice President of SDMC. "Through collaboration with esteemed partners like MaxLinear, we are developing state-of-the-art technologies and innovative solutions that empower operators and enhance the homes of tomorrow."

The DOCSIS 4.0 technology will enhance the upstream capacity of the HFC network to 6 Gbps, which is four times higher than the available 1.5 Gbps with DOCSIS 3.1. While cable customers currently still download significantly more data than they upload, there is an emerging upward trend in upstream data usage. This advancement brings accelerated speeds, reduced latency, and expanded connectivity to a multitude of devices in comparison to its previous iteration. Moreover, it significantly enhances the modem's communication efficiency while empowering cable operators to provide symmetrical multi-gigabit internet plans that rival those offered internet providers. By embracing this technological advancement, cable operators are poised to maintain a competitive edge in the future.
